Charlotte Kerner: Eileen Gray. Pioneer of Modernism

To mark the 50th anniversary of Eileen Gray’s death in October 2026, author Charlotte Kerner has revised and republished her biography of the Irish architect and designer. Entitled Pionierin der Moderne (Pioneer of Modernism), the book traces the life of a visionary whose designs feel more relevant today than ever before.

Kerner first turned her attention to Eileen Gray in 2002 with her biography Die Nonkonformistin (The Nonconformist). Since then, new research has provided fresh insights into Gray’s life and work, making this revised edition a timely opportunity to reflect not only on her remarkable achievements but also on her enduring legacy.

With narrative elegance and deep scholarly insight, Kerner paints a compelling portrait of a woman who was far ahead of her time. The biography explores not only Gray’s pioneering furniture and architectural designs, but also her unwavering artistic independence and her uncompromising pursuit of new ways of living.

Particular attention is given to Villa E.1027 on the French Riviera, now recognised as one of the defining works of modern architecture. Following decades of neglect, the house has been meticulously restored and today forms the centrepiece of the open-air museum at Site Cap Moderne.

Pionierin der Moderne is both an authoritative and highly accessible portrait of one of the twentieth century’s most influential designers – and an invitation to rediscover Eileen Gray.
