Corker No. 3

Herzog & de Meuron, 2022

Warm, grounding, stable and flexible in the ways it can be used: Corker is one of those universal talents that simply look good in any environment as an extra seat or side table. Corker is available in three sizes and plays with its nature not only in its name but also in its design: The silhouette of a wine bottle cork served as inspiration. The piece of furniture can almost be viewed as a pop art object due to its direct, simply enlarged reference to an object taken from everyday culture.

As timeless as the Corker is in terms of function and design, its material properties are just as visionary: the furniture owes its inviting velvety feel to the cork used, which comes from local, sustainable forestry in Portugal. The cork pieces are naturally bonded under hot steam and high pressure, using the resin released during the process.

Sustainably produced and flexible in use, this design piece works beautifully in every living space. Whether used as a stool or a side table, it complements a wide variety of settings – indoors and outside. As the Corker is manufactured without the use of adhesives, it is perfectly suited for outdoor use. The Corker series stands for sustainable design and is fully recyclable.

Corker originated at the London Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012. The design of the temporary summer pavilion was a joint project by the architectural office Herzog [&] de Meuron and Chinese artist, designer and architect Ai Weiwei. The cork design object was part of the overall concept.
